First Period

The experience in Europe

1892 – 1929 · Russia, France, Switzerland, Spain

1892
Birth

Born in Grodno, Russia

Daughter of a colonel in the czarist army, she grew up in St. Petersburg in an aristocratic and culturally vibrant environment.

Origins and initial formation

The young Helena — called Nelly for the family — she attended the Tagantsevskaya Women's Gymnasium in St. Petersburg, with a solid program in sciences and humanities. She learned piano and spoke German, English, and French. Her contact with socially engaged Russian writers and artists shaped her sensitivity to the people's issues.

1910
Paris

Arrives in France — Bergson and Janet at the Collège de France

A revolutionary climate in Russia leads the family to France. Helena decides to study psychology after attending lectures by Bergson and Pierre Janet.

The decision for psychology

At the Collège de France, Antipoff was marked by two thinkers: Henri Bergson (1859–1941), through the phenomenological approach to consciousness; and Pierre Janet (1859–1947), through the functional study of human behavior. This dual influence would be the basis of his entire later vision of intelligence and education.

1911–12
Sorbonne

The Binet-Simon Laboratory — and the meeting with Claparède

Works with Théodore Simon in the laboratory founded by Binet; meets Édouard Claparède, who invites her to Geneva.

The lab that changed its trajectory

In the Laboratory of Pedagogical Psychology founded by Alfred Binet (1857–1911), Antipoff participated in experiments with the Binet-Simon Scale. There he met Édouard Claparède (1873–1940), who organized the Jean-Jacques Rousseau Institute—Europe's first higher education institution dedicated to educational science research. Contact with Claparède would be the primary intellectual reference for his entire career.

1912–14
Geneva

Jean-Jacques Rousseau Institute — The Active School

Holds a degree in Educational Sciences; taught at the Maison des Petits as one of the first teachers, under the supervision of Claparède.

Geneva: The Synthesis of Functionalism and the Active School

At Rousseau Institute, Antipoff absorbed the Functional education Claparède: intelligence as an active instrument of adaptation, not a fixed set of inherited faculties. In House of Little Ones — Experimental school of the Institute — the methods of the "École Active" were tested in practice with young children.

1915–16
Spain

Period in Spain with the first husband

She lives in Gijón (Asturias) with the journalist Rafael Sánchez de Ocaña; she publishes articles on progressive methods for early childhood education.

A little-known chapter

Between 1915 and 1916, Antipoff lived in Spain with her first husband, the lawyer and journalist Rafael Sánchez de Ocaña, Director of the journal Gijón's Northwest. In 1917, he left for Russia in search of his father, a lieutenant general in the Imperial Army who had gone missing on the battlefield.

1917–24
Revolution

Revolutionary Russia — pedology and the historical-cultural approach

Works with abandoned children in Petrograd and Vyatka; contact with Soviet psychology; publishes articles criticized by the authorities.

The Soviet experience that transformed his thinking

As an examining psychologist in Petrograd, Antipoff observed that abandoned children scored low on the Binet-Simon Scale, but were not mentally challenged. They showed a "surprising ability to deal with concrete life problems." What they lacked was the experience of regular family and school life—their sociocultural background explained the outcome. This insight would generate their most original concept: the "civilized intelligence".

1926–29
Return to Geneva

Claparède Assistant - European and Soviet Synthesis

Research on child intelligence, motor skills, and moral judgments; publishes in Archives de Psychologie and L'Éducateur.

Intellectual maturation before Brazil

Back in Geneva, Antipoff applied the Lazurski's natural experimentation method — observation of children in their real environment, not in a laboratory — in Swiss schools. Your articles in Archives of Psychology reveal a researcher who already integrated Genevan functionalism with sociocultural perspectives absorbed in Russia. This is where the invitation to the government of Minas Gerais came from.

Second Period

Investigating Brazilian children and youth

1929 – 1945 · Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais

1929
Arrival

Belo Horizonte - Teacher Training School

Hired by the government of Minas Gerais to teach Educational Psychology and direct the Psychology Laboratory.

A two-year contract that lasted a lifetime

The contract was for 2 years, with a salary of 2,000 Swiss francs. The threat of war in Europe, the inspiring work she found in Brazil, and her stateless status in Switzerland (she traveled with a League of Nations Nansen passport) led her to stay permanently.

1930–31
Research

Studies on children from Minas Gerais - "civilized intelligence"

Empirical research shows that IQ test performance reflects sociocultural conditions, not innate natural ability.

Antipoff's most original theoretical contribution

Comparing children from different neighborhoods in BH with studies from Germany, USA, Switzerland, and Moscow, Antipoff demonstrated a high correlation between socioeconomic status and test performance. He proposed that the tests measure "civilized intelligence"product of the interaction between biological predispositions and socioculutral experiences. Claparède cited this study in Functional Education (1931).

1930s
School Science

"Escolology" — the New Science of Schools

Propose a distinct scientific field for the study of schools as complex institutions, publishing detailed reports in the Journal of Education.

A systemic view of the school

For Antipoff, school performance was the result of multiple influences: school structure, resources, teachers' methods, students' social situation, health, and family ties. This set of studies comprised what she called "escolologia".

A Sociedade Pestalozzi reunia médicos, professores e sacerdotes.

1940
Legado

Fazenda do Rosário — educação, trabalho e vida comunitária

1945–48

1974
Falecimento
